Process of Agricultural Development in Bangladesh

This research-based publication identified a few models for development of agricultural policy, land market, rice farming and vegetable farming. The agricultural policies were first analyzed to identify their contributions to technological progress in crop farming. This book presented how the changes in politics made it revamped, how the farmers once struggling for rice enjoyed rice production, and how the commercial vegetable farming expanded after an expansion of its distant marketing.

Tanguar Haor
A Diversified Freshwater Wetland

About 50% of the land in Bangladesh is classified as wetlands, and a major art of this area is covered by freshwater wetlands. ‘Tanguar Haor’ located in the northeastern part, is one of the largest natural freshwater wetlands of the country. It occupies an area of 10,000 hectares with forty-six villages scattered in surrounding private lands. This haor is extremely important for its large and diverse waterfowl populations and other biological resources, especially the large number of waterfowl species. This study found that most of the villagers depend on the haor for fishing, grazing, farming, and wetland vegetation for fuel. This book illustrates the importance of Tanguar Haor resources on local people’s livelihood and their willingness, constraints and opportunities to participation in the haor management.

Wetland Management and Valuation:
The Sundarbans perspective for participatory forestry

The emergence of community-based forestry management is very common for forest policies in the developing world. Thus, the search for traditional forest bureaucracy of state monopoly and top-down approaches over wetland management need to be critically analysed as they have become progressively ineffective to stop the depletion.
This book is a revised form of the Masters dissertation done in the University of Bradford, UK in 1999-2000. It is hoped that this book should provide serious students of development studies and other social sciences with basic ideas on contemporary issues of forest management.
